Sustainable Interior Design. What is it?
Sustainable interior design is an approach to interior design that seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of the design process and the finished space. It involves designing spaces that are healthy, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible. I don’t believe that as a society we will ever be able to achieve a 100% sustainable world, however, if as a society we all made small changes we can definitely make an impact and create healthier and sustainably conscious spaces and homes.
Some key principles of sustainable interior design:
Use of sustainable materials: Sourcing materials that have a low environmental impact, such as recycled materials, renewable resources (sources that can be replenished over time), and materials that are locally sourced (supporting local).
Energy efficiency: Seek to reduce energy consumption by using energy-efficient lighting and appliances, incorporating natural lighting and ventilation, and using insulation and efficient heating and cooling systems. The orientation of a space can also help with energy efficiency.
Indoor air quality: Designing spaces that promote good indoor air quality, by using non-toxic paints, adhesives, and finishes, and using materials that do not emit harmful chemicals.
Water conservation: Includes the use of water-efficient fixtures, such as low-flow toilets and showerheads, and the incorporation of water-saving technologies.
Waste reduction: Seek to minimize waste by using materials efficiently, recycling materials, and designing spaces with a focus on durability and longevity.
Sustainable interior design seeks to create spaces that are environmentally responsible, promote human health and well-being, and reduce negative impacts on the planet. It can only be good for everyone. If you are interested in exploring the idea of sustainable interior design, we’d love to chat with you. Contact us here:
